A conversation with AGGG artist, Laura Buxo 

Q: Tell us about your path into art.
A: There has always been a pencil, pen, or paintbrush in my hand. From an early age, I was drawn to representing what I saw—trees, animals, and flowers. When I felt ready to share my work publicly, I applied and was juried into an art gallery. After moving to Greenville in 2005, I envisioned creating a cooperative gallery where artists could collaborate and inspire one another. That dream became a reality in 2007 with the launch of Artists Guild Gallery.

Q: What motivated you to pursue art more seriously?
A: Over time, creating art became more than just a passion—it became something I felt compelled to pursue and share. The encouragement of others and the joy I found in the creative process gave me the confidence to take that next step and commit to art as a central part of my life.

Q: How does your background impact your work?
A: I grew up on a small farm in Washington State, surrounded by the beauty of Puget Sound and the mountains. I spent my time fishing, hiking, water skiing, and snow skiing. I also became a pilot, and flying gave me a unique perspective on the landscape. These experiences continue to influence my work and deepen my appreciation for the natural world.

Q: What is your favorite medium and sources of inspiration?
A: I enjoy both watercolor and oil painting. Since I began plein air painting, oils have become my primary focus because they are more predictable in a changing environment. My inspiration comes from the world around me—landscapes, still life, and animals.

Q: How has your artistic style evolved?
A: My style has evolved from focusing on careful representation to embracing a more expressive approach. While I still value realism, I’ve become more interested in capturing light, mood, and atmosphere, allowing my brushwork to become looser and more suggestive over time.

Q: What story or emotion do you want to convey through your artwork?
A: I like to think of myself as a happy painter. The world around me—landscapes, still life, and furry friends—is the focus of my work. I hope my paintings convey a sense of joy, warmth, and appreciation for everyday beauty.

Q: Who are your artistic influences?
A: My favorite artists are John Singer Sargent and Richard Schmid. Both are realistic painters, but if you look closely, their brushstrokes are quite abstract. That balance between realism and expressive mark-making continues to inspire me.

Q: What art instruction or practice helped you become a better artist?
A: Two things have improved my painting the most: painting every day, even if it’s just something small, and painting from life—either plein air or still life in my studio. The best advice I’ve received is, “Every painting goes through an ugly phase.” Knowing that helps me push through challenges and stay on course.

Q: What advice would you give to emerging artists?
A: Stay consistent, be patient with yourself, and don’t be afraid of failure. Growth comes from doing the work, learning from mistakes, and continuing to show up with curiosity and dedication.

Q: What are your biggest challenges as an artist?
A: One of the most difficult parts of being an artist is managing the negative thoughts that can follow a failed painting. Because art is often a solitary pursuit, it’s important to surround yourself with supportive, creative people who encourage and inspire you.

Q: What other interests do you have beyond your art?
A: I enjoy nature, gardening, travel, and animals. I also value working with fellow artists at AGGG to help build an even more vibrant art culture in Greenville, South Carolina.
